Getting Here

While being quite geographically isolated, Bougainville is readily accessible to the adventurous traveller. Regular flight and passenger ferry services connect Bougainville to Papua New Guinea and the rest of the world. Travellers to Bougainville will need to obtain a Papua New Guinea visitor’s visa. Tourist visas are available upon arrival in Port Moresby to citizens of the USA, United Kingdom, New Zealand and most European countries, provided onward air-tickets are carried by the visitor. By Air

Bougainville has two operational airports, one each on our two main islands - Buka and Bougainville. Buka Airport is 5 minutes’ drive from Buka Town while Aropa Airport is 30 minutes from Arawa Town on Bougainville Island.

Air Niugini currently offers daily flights from Port Moresby and Rabaul to Buka. Air Niugini also offers flights to Arawa three days a week. There are various connecting flights with Port Moresby from Australia (Cairns & Brisbane) and throughout Asia-Pacific (Bali, Hong Kong, Honiara, Manila, Nadi, Singapore, Port Vila and Tokyo).  Airlines PNG also operates regular services to Bougainville and can be found at www.apng.com.

Travel Air PNG offers less frequent services to Bougainville, but to check their schedule visit www.travelairpng.com.

The Chebu Shipping Company operates a passenger ferry, the MV Chebu, on a regular service to Buka from Lae via Kimbe and Rabaul.
